Project Rebuild: An Inside Look at the Renovation of Court

Project Rebuild, the hands-on STEM seminar covering the renovation of Court Dorm, began yesterday. With engaging speakers from Hord Coplan Macht and Forrester Construction, the team handling the design and construction of the building and that also worked on Stuart Hall, our girls were given an in-depth look at this exciting project.
The first session of Project Rebuild introduced students to Building Information Modeling, or BIM. Three members of the architecture firm Hord Coplan Macht -- Principal Peter Winebrenner, Project Manager Leanne Phillips, and Interior Designer Shooka Sharafi -- showed the girls how BIM softwares SketchUp and Revvit can be used to convey design concepts to clients in an interactive and comprehensive way, even before the first brick is laid. Forrester Construction's Jennifer Meador, the Assistant Preconstruction Manager, then demonstrated how these models are taken even further for both clients, as a time-lapse flow of the construction schedule is incorporated, and for engineers, who will rely on the design as construction gets underway.

Our girls had the opportunity to play with SketchUp, which is a free program offered by Google. Under the guidance of Ms. Sharafi, students navigated the 3D terrain and built up a simple rectangle into a house. Their homework for next month's session is to use the software to render one of the buildings on Foxcroft's campus.

As designs are completed and construction begins, Project Rebuild students will visit the job site regularly, taking hard-hat tours to see the design elements and construction techniques they were introduced to through seminars in a real-world environment.

Project Rebuild follows Project Greenbuild, the highly successful seminar chronicling the construction of Stuart Hall. Seminars such as these introduce our students to the STEM fields in ways that relate directly to them, further enhancing the lessons and strengthening what the girls take away.
