Charlotte Haxall Noland is born at Burrland, in Fauquier County, Virginia.

One of seven children, she develops a love for animals and nature, as well as self-reliance, ingenuity and a deep abiding faith. Young Charlotte is educated at home and at schools in Baltimore, MD, and Washington, DC, but doesn't enjoy school. She vows to create a school of her own “that girls will love to come to and never want to leave.”
